Message from the Director
In April 2021, I was appointed as a successor to Director Katsuhiko Kaneko. Following the footsteps of the first Director Yoji Ishijima, and my predecessor, Former Director Kaneko, I am the third director from Hokkaido University. People often have the view that the advancements made by people prior to me may fade, but I intend to give my best to continue the research achievements, human resources, and research facilities for future generations. I look forward to your cooperation.
The geosphere is one of the frontiers of humankind, but unlike the universe and the ocean, it is yet to garner due attention. The geosphere contains resources such as energy, minerals, and water necessary for our lives, and in recent years, it has been regarded as a treasure trove of microbial resources. Considering the future of humankind, it is of utmost importance to use these resources sustainably and preserve the environment of the geosphere.
With this in mind, the Horonobe Research Institute for the Surface Environment will utilize the underground research facility constructed in Honorobe to examine the environment of the area and develop science and technology to deal with environmental problems and develop future resources. One of the major goals of our Institute is to contribute to the general population and the industry through research. All the staff will continue to pursue research in order to disseminate the knowledge acquired at the Institute to the whole world.
We appreciate your understanding and support.
